History and politics

"As terrible as the War of the Diamonds is, which officially ends in 1682, it marks a new era for Meuriaden. It is proof of how far tribes can go in their hatred of each other, and the horror frightens even the most independent groups into cooperation. In his “Essay on War and Conflict in Faerie”, (2061) S. Marec reviews the repercussions of the war on both Dwen and Sylph societies and how they have shaped the way these Provinces have operated for the hundreds of years since.

In the years following the war, cross-species alliances become more common and result in the Treaty of the signing of the Treaty of the Tribes in 1723. The historical move, led by Gareth the Mixed-Blood, a gnomish and elf negotiator, is the culmination of days of negotation by representatives of all species and tribes. Provinces are created then and land registries, including common land, are agreed. The monetary system Worth is put in place to ensure the economic interest of peace and to value the contribution of all species to the country’s prosperity. The highly controversial move remains a point of fierce debate in the House of Tribes to this day.

The unification of Meuriaden is therefore historically modern, and as such still a fragile concept to many tribes. Cross-species unions remain scarce, except in North City, and feuds between neighbouring tribes are common, as the Conflict and Negotiation Minitstry’s long waiting list can attest.
Some have argued that this unification is an asset the fight against the Emtehem, as only a united nation and army can be strong enough to vanquish the immortal sorcerer, while independentists view the Treaty as a step towards the Emtehem’s eternal goal: the unification of the Four Cities."
